Repeat, Play, Skip

Enhancing interactivity of the online dating experience through sharing music interests

Project Specifications

My Role: UI & UX Design

Client: Hinge (Hypothetical)

Timeline: 2 Weeks

Tools: Figma, Google Docs, Google Forms, Zoom

Problem Statement

Hinge currently does not provide any prompts or features where users can spark new connections through sharing their music interests.

Background

Dating apps can often get a reputation of being shallow and lacking meaningful human connection. For many people, music is so personal and can be a memorable conversation starter. Popular dating apps, such as Bumble, have already utilized using music to connect their users on another level. Their current feature allows users to connect their Spotify account to their Bumble profile where people can view their most listened to artists.

Research

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed Hinge’s two biggest competitors, Tinder and Bumble.

👍🏼PROS
  • easy to connect Spotify to Tinder and Bumble Profile

  • eye catching album covers and artist images

👎🏼CONS
  • not customizable — just automatically shows top played music

  • not interactive — can’t be replied to or commented on like the other prompts

User Surveys

Insights Learned

💡 there’s room to improve with how interactive the online dating experience can be for users.

💡 sharing music interests can spark meaningful connections and conversations.

💡 seeing someone’s music interests on their profile will catch user’s attention and may even influence their chances of matching.

💡 a new interactive feature that prioritizes the ability to share music interests will enhance user experience and attract more users to Hinge

Key Iteration

Feedback from testing the original version prompted iteration of the design.

  • Users experienced confusion with the boxes and the repeat, play, and skip symbols

  • Users interacted with the final version more intuitively

  • The reset button made it easier for the user to start over

 Final Prototype

Testing

Testing Objectives

📝 user will successfully send a like to Jennie’s profile using the interactive prompt “Repeat, Play, Skip”

📝 observe how user interacts and navigates through the new feature

📝 identify any successes and confusion the user may experience

📝 would the user use this in real life if Hinge came out with this feature?

Results Summary

⭐ 7/7 users successfully interacted with “Repeat, Play, Skip” feature

⭐ users enjoyed how interactive it was

⭐ users appreciated how they were able to personalize showcasing their music interests

Feedback Highlights

I like it because I can make more of a connection with the person, it’s more than just a surface level connection.”

“Music is so personal, to me at least, so being able to include it in dating apps is important.”

“This is more fun because other stuff right now, you just respond quickly with a comment — if you even do that.

Next Steps

📝 If I were to continue working on this, I would design a feature to allow the user to play a short snippet of the three songs provided, in case they wanted to hear it.

📝 I would also create more wireframes where the user can add three albums or three artists, so they are not only limited to choosing songs.

📝 I would recruit more users to test these updated features and get their feedback.
